Owusu's goal is to score goals

Dare to dream: Emmanuel Owusu says his idols Ronaldo (l) and Neymar are two of the world's top players

Brazil’s Neymar Jr. runs with the ball, he dribbles two defenders, he shoots and he scores!

FC Barcelona forward Neymar is on top of his game and is one of the best soccer players in the world right now. But my favorite player is Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. For me, he’s the best because he has set many records, scored many goals, and won many trophies.

It’s my professional goal to be a soccer player.
I currently play for the school soccer team, where they teach us how to play and improve our skills.

The profession appeals to me because it is fun to play and it pays a lot of money. There is also an added benefit: it’s a sport so it helps to exercise the body and keep the player healthy.

There are many big soccer leagues around the world. England has the Premier League, Germany has the Bundesliga and Spain has La Liga BBVA. The letters stands for Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, Spain’s second largest bank, which has sponsored La Liga since 2008.

Hand of God

Any fan of the sport knows about soccer legends like Argentina’s Diego Maradona, France’s Zinedine Zidane and Brazil’s Pelé.

A lot of people remember how Maradona broke soccer rules and hand-balled the ball into the net in a Quarter Final game against England in 1986 at the FIFA World Cup in Mexico City. He said the “Hand of God” helped him.

The great Zidane scored two important goals to help take France to a 3-0 win over Brazil in the 1998 FIFA World Cup final in Paris.

Pelé is regarded as the greatest soccer player ever. He and Maradona were named FIFA Player of the (20th) Century. Besides Pelé’s many soccer achievements, he linked the words “Beautiful Game” to soccer. He also speaks up for the poor as a campaigner in Brazil for social issues.

Dream

For the salary, it depends on how well you play. The best players in the world like Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Ronaldo get millions of Euros a year. The highest-paid soccer player is Cameroon forward Samuel Eto’o, who gets 20 million Euros a year (that’s about $22-million)

My dream is to be in the Manchester United Youth Club, and then play for Manchester United in England.

As I watch Neymar and Ronaldo, I ask myself: Could that be me out there? Could I be the one who runs with the ball, who dribbles defenders, who shoots, scores – and sets records, scores goals and wins trophies? I dare to dream…

Emmanuel Owusu is originally from Ghana. His dream destination is England because, he says, they have the best soccer league on the planet.

  1. I remember the "Hand-of-God" goal against England. Maradona knew he had committed handball - and gotten away with it. Great article.

A friend of mine sent me this report. First good luck with becoming a professional soccer player at Old Trafford. Second, if for some reason that career doesn't work out think about one in sports journalism. I used to write a national column on soccer and see you have a very good knack for writing. Good luck and great job. You should task yourself with writing once a week so that you can put in your resume that you have a weekly soccer column and put that on your resume. Will also be good for potential soccer team's looking at you since they will see you are not just a soccer player but a soccer player with a brain. Well done.
